MCS certification explained

What the badge actually guarantees — and what it does not.

Last updated Next review

MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) certifies both heat pump products and the companies that install them, and an MCS-certified installer is required to claim the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant (GOV.UK, 2026). Certification covers design standards, commissioning and handover documentation, and every compliant install is issued an MCS certificate registered against the property.

We’re funded by installer referral fees when you request quotes. Our editorial coverage isn’t paid for — read our editorial policy and how we rank installers.

What MCS covers

  • A room-by-room heat loss calculation to the relevant standard.
  • A performance estimate showing expected annual heat output and efficiency.
  • Noise assessment under MCS 020 for the outdoor unit position.
  • Commissioning records and a customer handover pack.
  • A registered MCS certificate, needed for grant claims and often for resale.

What MCS does not guarantee

Certification is a scheme-level check, not a guarantee that every job is perfect. It does not fix pricing, does not rate customer service, and does not mean the design is optimal for your home. Treat it as a floor, not a ranking.

How to verify an installer

  • Search the company on the MCS certified installer register.
  • Check the certification covers heat pumps specifically, not just solar.
  • Ask for the MCS certificate number of a recent nearby install.
  • Confirm who holds the workmanship warranty and for how long.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an MCS installer for the heat pump grant?
Yes. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant can only be claimed by an MCS-certified installer.
Is MCS a guarantee of quality?
It sets minimum design and documentation standards, but it is not a quality ranking — compare quotes and references as well.
What documents should I receive after installation?
An MCS certificate, heat loss calculation, performance estimate, commissioning sheet, warranty details and user handover pack.
